How to Start Homesteading

A practical beginner's guide to homesteading — from choosing land to growing your first garden and raising small livestock.

Why Homesteading?

Homesteading is about building self-reliance — growing your own food, reducing dependence on supply chains, and developing practical skills. You don't need 100 acres to start. Many homesteaders begin on a quarter acre or less.

Choosing Your Location

Location matters more than almost anything else. Your USDA hardiness zone determines what you can grow, and your state's regulations affect everything from rainwater collection to livestock.

Start with a Garden

Begin with 4-6 easy crops suited to your zone. Root vegetables (potatoes, carrots) and greens (lettuce, kale) are forgiving for beginners. Use your zone's planting calendar to time your plantings around frost dates.

Beginner crop priorities

  • Potatoes — high calorie yield per square foot
  • Beans — fix nitrogen, easy to dry and store
  • Squash — stores well through winter
  • Leafy greens — fast harvest, multiple succession plantings

Small Livestock

Chickens are the classic starter livestock — they provide eggs, pest control, and compost material. Rabbits are another low-space option with high protein yield. Check local ordinances before committing.

Water and Energy

Rainwater harvesting (where legal) and a basic solar setup give you resilience against utility disruptions. Even a small 400W solar panel system can keep essential devices charged and a chest freezer running.

Build Skills Gradually

Don't try to do everything in year one. A practical progression: garden first season, add food preservation second season, introduce small livestock third season, expand energy systems as budget allows.
