USDA Hardiness Zone

Zone 1A Survival Guide

Minimum winter temperature: -60 to -55°F

About Zone 1

Climate: The coldest zone in the US, with winter lows dropping to -60°F. Permafrost and extreme wind chill define daily life for much of the year.

Geography: Found only in interior Alaska — remote communities like Fairbanks and the North Slope.

Survival: Shelter and heating are the top priorities. Food storage, cold-weather gear, and fuel reserves are critical. Outdoor growing is extremely limited.

Growing season: Roughly 50–90 frost-free days. The midnight sun allows intense summer growing, but the window is very short.
