USDA Hardiness Zone

Zone 3A Survival Guide

Minimum winter temperature: -40 to -35°F

About Zone 3

Climate: Harsh winters with lows from -40°F to -30°F. Deep snow cover is common and temperatures can stay below zero for extended stretches.

Geography: Northern tier states — much of Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern New England, and mountain areas of the Rockies.

Survival: Winter preparedness is paramount. Firewood, preserved food, and reliable water sources that won't freeze are key. Spring flooding can be a hazard.

Growing season: Around 100–130 frost-free days. Short-season varieties of tomatoes, beans, and root crops can succeed with planning.
