Zone 5B Survival Guide

Minimum winter temperature: -15 to -10°F

About Zone 5

Climate: Moderate cold winters with lows from -20°F to -10°F. Winters are real but manageable, with reliable freeze-thaw cycles.

Geography: A wide band across the central US — the mid-Atlantic, lower Midwest, parts of the Pacific Northwest, and mid-elevation mountain areas.

Survival: One of the most balanced zones for self-sufficiency. Good crop diversity, four distinct seasons, and manageable winter conditions.

Growing season: Around 150–180 frost-free days. Most common garden crops thrive, and fruit trees like apples and pears do well.
